The Discovery program is looking for a talented intern to support the development of disease-relevant in vitro assays targeting key indications. The goal is to develop in vitro models and robust phenotypic assays to probing cell health and function of the peripheral nervous system. The project will involve extensive culturing of cells and establishing/optimizing paradigms to model autoimmune disease states.  These will be achieved by employing immunochemical, imaging, and biochemical techniques to assess multiple endpoints. Developed cell-based assays will be used to support screens for bioactive compound identification. The intern will participate in experimental design and execution, analyze data, and prepare reports. At the end of the internship, the intern will give an inter-departmental presentation of their work and findings. 
  
 
Skills:  
 
•    Previous cell culture experience is a must. Experience with iPSCs, Schwann cells and/or neurons is a plus. 
•    Understanding and experience in immunocytochemistry. 
•    Experience with plate-based biochemical assays. 
•    Proficiency with imaging platforms. 
•    Ability to work independently. 
•    Excellent communication and interpersonal skills. 
•    Excellent record keeping. 
 

Requirements 

  • Level: Master's or PhD student with a GPA of at 3.0 

  • Area of Study: Biology, Biochemistry, Neuroscience, or related fields. 

  • Basic Skills Necessary: Ability to perform literature searches, proficiency in Microsoft Office, record keeping, data analysis and presentation. 

  • Lab Skills Necessary: 

  • Basic Lab Skills: Reagent preparation, use of multi-channel pipettes, making solutions and buffers, laboratory safety awareness 

  • Advanced Lab Skills: Previous cell culture experience (must), proficiency with imaging platform and plate reader 

  • Role is lab based and will be at the Research Triangle Park office 5 days per week.
