The intern will be working with the Process Development & Technology department to evaluate a clinical-scale manufacturing process and perform scale-up analysis for transfer to industrial scale.  The analysis will include activities such as identification of process efficiencies, material balance calculations, scale-up calculations, and determination of equipment requirements.  If the evaluation identifies the need for additional data to support the scale-up and transfer, study design and execution may be included in the project.  The analysis will be documented and included as part of the process transfer package.  Opportunities to interact with Engineering and Manufacturing Operations, as well as R&D, will be available.  The intern will be introduced to many scales of protein purification processes and challenges of scale-up and technology transfer.  This is a good opportunity for a student who is interested in a broader picture of the pharmaceutical industry and learning how a purification process travels from development to commercial manufacturing.  The intern will also present their work to an inter-departmental audience at the conclusion of the internship.


The job is located at the Grifols Clayton, NC site.



  • School experience:  Rising undergraduate Junior or Senior, or graduate student, pursuing a degree in Chemical/Biochemical Engineering, Bioprocessing Science, Chemistry, Biochemistry, or equivalent.
  • Candidate must currently have GPA of 3.00 or higher.
  • Basic skills necessary:  Ability to communicate effectively, ability to work under direction. Familiarity/comfort with MS Office suite programs.
  • Lab skills preferred:  Maintaining a notebook, pipetting, volume and weight measurement, preparation of solutions and buffers.
  • Additional skills:  Lean Six Sigma, Project Management, Risk Analysis, Strong analytical reasoning skills.
