Medical Technologist - $1,000 sign-on bonus!
Hours: Monday to Friday - Day Shift, No Weekends, No Holidays (Subject to change)
Under supervision, this position performs a limited variety of standard, but specialized medical laboratory tests on human source plasma products. Process whole blood and frozen RBCs. Reviews, interprets, analyzes, and records test results. Selects test procedures and prepares specimen. Prepares and controls test materials such as solutions and reagents. Maintains and calibrates laboratory instruments. Within established criteria, uses judgment and initiative in planning sequences of tasks required to complete recurring assignments. Obtains assistance from Supervisor or Medical Technologist II for deviations and unanticipated or unfamiliar problems.
- Under supervision, perform immunohematology testing on a large number of human source specimens following Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
- Sample Suitability - Check samples for correct amount, suitable integrity, identification and matching paperwork.
- Record results after interpretation and review of paperwork. Date and sign all required paperwork and submit test batch for release.
- Clean work station and all tools used in the assay.
- Sample Storage and disposition - Prepare samples for storage per established procedures.
- Perform quality control and maintenance on all instruments and tools needed to perform tests. Records results.
- Monitor inventory of reagents for assigned tests and advise Supervisor of any reaent loss.
- Run specialized computer programs for designated assignments.
- Under supervision is able to glycerolize and deglycerolize red blood cells according to established procedures.
- Monitor the inventory of frozen red blood cells, and monitor the whole blood units as they are available for freezing. Notify Operational Supervisor of RBC loss.
- Able to detect problems with the red blood cells and report observations to the Supervisor or MT-II.
- Knowledge of the cGMP (CFR) regulations and AABB guidelines for the processing of whole bood, frozen red blood cells, and degylverotlized red blood cells.
- Able to prepare reagents with ability to utilize the equipment for such preparation.
- Interacts and supports BPC Specialty Program management.
- Assist management and Medical Technologist II’s on special projects and additional assignments, as required.
Education Requirements: Associates degree or equivalent with specific training in a Medical Technologist/Technician program and clinical lab training (i.e., hospital or vocational school rotation).
Experience Requirements: Six months experience in a clinical laboratory setting.
Other Essential Knowledge: Florida State BPR Licensed Medical Laboratory Technologist/Technician. Maintains BPR licensure by complying with continuing education requirements and payment of relicensing fees. Good communication skills; ability to work well with other; be flexible and able to handle multiple priorities; works well under pressure; capable of performing testing following established guidelines without assistance; detail-oriented; exercise good judgment in apprising Medical Technologist II or Operational Supervisor when needed assistance or guidance is required. Ability to lift approximately 10 lbs. Ability to set-up, operate, program, disassemble, clean, and quality control required laboratory equipment. Run specialized computer programs. Make math calculations involving fractions, decimals, and percentages for calculation of cut-off values. Make math calculations involving Beer’s Law, senal dilutions, solution strengths and percentages.
Working Conditions: Physical: Stands or sits to perform tests 75% of the time. Walks, climbs stairs, lifts and carries bins, boxes, and waster/water canisters weighing up to 10lbs. 25% of time. Uses senses of sight, color determination, hearing, and smell. Uses finder dexterity to perform tests and operate equipment. Hazards: Include continuous exposure to contaminated waste and infectious materials (human source products), toxic chemicals, chemical fumes and odors, noise from compressors, and temperature extremes when going from cooler and freezer. Stressors. Meeting testing deadlines for multiple contracts. Occasionally required to work overtime.
