Senior Process Development Chemist - Immunohematology

 

Summary:

The Sr. Process Development Chemist works primarily in the field of blood component manufacturing such as red blood cells (RBC) which are used for our blood group typing products. The position has the opportunity to build this new production line at our San Diego Campus with us from scratch and will be Subject Matter Expert in execution of newly transferred blood component manufacturing processes. The position reports directly to the Director of Manufacturing Support. RBC experience and work experience in a regulated (GLP/cGMP) industry is required to be able to fulfill the role as well as a strong manufacturing background. The Sr. Process Development Chemist will be training junior staff in manufacturing activities, execute blood component manufacturing and transfer Process into Production.

Your primary responsibilities*:

  • You are subject matter expert on ERP, cycle count transactions and perform good inventory management practices throughout the manufacturing process
  • You participate as an extended Operations Core Team member for New Product Development Projects
  • You Manages projects and report to management on project progress as required
  • You will perform activities related to the new process transfer, including DCM, SAP change control, personnel training
  •  you will initiate and execute continuous improvement activities of existing processes
  • You oversee or execute installation and validation of new instruments and equipment an execute troubleshooting activities for moderately complex manufacturing processes
  • You support the design of new qualification protocols and participate in the development of validation documents
  • You generate notebook studies and tech reports which includes product shelf life and hold times 
  • You complete data gathering and analyze under supervision of scientific staff
  • You troubleshoot manufacturing processes, instrumentation, IT software related to lab instruments, etc. to develop and improve content    
  • You assist in process transfers to manufacturing and you use technical knowledge and independent judgement to provide on-the-spot support to manufacturing to ensure successful completion of builds
  • You perform manufacturing tasks such as blood product manufacturing and freeze, wash or deglycerolizing of blood products
  • You maintain lab under cGMP conditions

About you:

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities we are looking for

  • Working knowledge of cGMP/GLP, proficiency in Microsoft Office, basic Change Control
  • Working knowledge of the appropriate analytical techniques is required
  • Manufacturing experience in blood components manufacturing preferred
  • Development and Problem-Solving experience in blood processing is preferred 
  • Ability to effectively and actively communicate with cross-functional partners (e.g., Supply Chain, Manufacturing Sciences, Warehouse)
  • Ability to train personnel effectively
  • Good organizational skills and strong attention to detail
  • Team oriented, attentive and willing to learn new processes
  • Demonstrated technical writing skills
  • Ability to write, review, mark-up and format documents in Word
  • Demonstrated ability to multitask, prioritize and complete goals
  • Demonstrated sound technical knowledge and good independent judgement

Education and Experience we require for this role

  • Typically requires a Bachelor’s degree or Master's Degree in Microbiology, Biology, (Bio)Chemistry, Chemical Engineering or related field
  • 5+ years of related experience in a laboratory or commercial manufacturing setting with a Bachelor’s degree or 2-4 years if you have a Master's degree
  • 1 year of experience with Good Documentation Practices (GDP), Current Good Manufacturing Practices (cGMP) and ISO 13485 Regulations is preferred
  • experience with blood product manufacturing is preferred

 

 

Equivalency

Depending on area of assignment, directly related experience or a combination of directly related education and experience and/or competencies may be considered in place of the stated requirements.

 

Occupational Demands

May require flexibility to work a variable schedule.

May occasionally lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise manipulate objects up to 25 pounds in weight, and/or lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise manipulate objects up to 10 pounds in weight frequently or continuously.

 

Pay Scale:

Pay scale of $81,622-$102,000/year, depending on training, education and experience.  This position is eligible to participate in up to 8% of the company bonus pool.    We offer benefits including medical, PTO, up to 5% 401K match, and tuition reimbursement.
