We are seeking a highly skilled and motivated Scientist who is passionate about utilizing their expertise in oligonucleotide chemistry to provide oligonucleotide synthesis, purification, and analysis for R&D projects.
The candidate will be responsible for a significant portion of a complex project or an entire less complex project or multiple less complex projects. The ideal candidate should understand the scope of the overall project in the scope of corporate strategy. They may manage 1 or more personnel and may represent R&D on a Core Team for a product development project.
Duties and Responsibilities
This position will require automated synthesis of oligonucleotides, purification of oligonucleotides by chromatographic techniques and characterization of oligonucleotides by a variety of physicochemical techniques and conjugation of oligonucleotides by a variety of methods. The candidate may also participate in basic research projects exploiting novel properties of oligonucleotides in R&D assays. The candidate is expected to present work internally or at scientific conferences or write scientific papers. They are required to collaborate and communicate effectively with junior level employees, peers and cross-functional teams across all levels of the organization.
- Perform automated oligonucleotide synthesis, deprotection and purification via standard phosphonamidite chemistry and chromatographic purification techniques.
- Conduct oligonucleotide analysis using LCMS, MALDI, UV/VIS, and HPLC/UPLC techniques. Evaluate and identify impurities, degradation products, and synthesis by-products. Establish analytical protocols and support implementation of these protocols.
- Lead and execute complex experiments, including providing guidance and direction on experimental design, analysis and interpretation of data, communication of results, and design of follow-up experiments. Responsible for subproject or project goals and deliverables.
- Interact with peers and supervisors, both within the team as well as with other teams, to provide experimental summaries, design input, and ancillary team functions.
- Maintain clearly written experimental records in both written and electronic formats.
- Familiar with standard software tools utilized in instrument control, data analysis, and reporting results.

Education:
• B.A. / B.S. Molecular Biology, Chemistry, Biochemistry or related field
• M.S. Molecular Biology, Chemistry, Biochemistry or related field
• Ph.D. Molecular Biology, Chemistry, Biochemistry or related field
Experience:
• 7-9 years post-baccalaureate laboratory experience. Industrial experience preferred.
• 6-8 years laboratory experience post-M.S. without thesis. Industrial experience preferred.
• 5-7 years laboratory experience post M.S. with thesis. Industrial experience preferred.
• Ph.D. with no post-doctoral research experience or 4-6 years industrial experience.
• Ph.D. with post-doctoral research experience and 3-5 years industrial experience.
Pay Scale
The estimated pay scale for a Scientist III role based in San Diego, California is $127,926 to $191,889. Additionally, the position is eligible to participate in up to 8% of the company bonus pool. Final compensation packages will ultimately depend on education, experience, skillset, knowledge, where the role is performed, internal equity and market data.
