Summary:

Summary: Scientist 1 is responsible for initiating, directing and executing scientific research and/or development strategies.                                                                                          

                                                           

 Primary responsibilities for role:

  • Independently designs and performs complex experiments, analyzes data and prepares reports for the sub-project in support of the overall project.                 
  • Understands the sub-project goals within the context of the overall project.                        
  • May be asked to supervise daily work of junior level employees as preparation for a management role at the next level.                                                          
  • Demonstrated competence in one or more of the following areas:                                    
    • Core technical skills in following areas - e.g. Microbiology, bioinformatics, sequencing, cloning, analytical chemistry, oligo synthesis and/or purification.
    • Proof of Concept, Feasibility and Optimization – e.g. Design of oligo systems including sequence retrieval, alignment, and variant identification, sample processing or assay formulation experiments using DOE and guard band. Perform experiments to support feasibility of software such as results processing, change to the instrument or new instrumentation.   
    • Assay Integration – Executing experiments in one or more of the following areas:
      • Support of the assay software file results processing or other software modules required to run the assay on the instrument.                                                          
      • Experiments to test assay performance at the extreme operating parameters of the instrument. Experiments to transfer successfully an assay fully developed on one platform to another. Experiments to improve assay or instrument robustness and ultimately performance.         
    • Verification and Validation – Participate in sample panel preparation using reference standards and other known clinical specimens. Experiments to verify and validate the performance of the assay with respect to specificity, sensitivity, reproducibility, and tolerance to interfering substances. Participate in data generation, collection, and analysis, protocol and report writing and review, and other design control activities.
  • Collaborates and communicates effectively with peers within and outside of the department and higher-level employees. Provides key support for internal and external customers. May participate as the primary R&D representative or part of the extended team in Core Teams.

Education:

B.S., Master's degree, or Ph.D. in Molecular Biology, Microbiology, Chemistry, Biochemistry, Bioengineering, Biomedical Engineering or related field. 

 

 

Experience:

  • 5-7 years post-baccalaureate laboratory experience. Industrial experience preferred.
  • 4-6 years laboratory experience post-master's degree without thesis. Industrial experience preferred.
  • 1-3 years laboratory experience post master's degree with thesis. Industrial experience preferred.
  •  Ph.D. with or without post-doctoral experience.

                                                           

Equivalency:

Depending on the area of assignment, directly related experience or a combination of directly related education and experience and/or competencies may be considered in place of the stated requirements.  Example:  If a job level requires a Bachelor’s degree plus 4 years of experience, an equivalency could include 8 years of experience, an Associate’s degree with 6 years of experience, or a Master’s degree with 2 years of experience.                                                                         

 

Occupational Demands:

  • May occasionally lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise manipulate objects up to 25 pounds in weight, and/or lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise manipulate objects up to 10 pounds in weight frequently or continuously.
