Grifols Diagnostic Solutions in San Diego is seeking a Director of R&D. The Director, R&D is responsible for leading a group (or groups) of Research Associates/Scientists working on complex projects in support of the research and/or product development goals and corporate strategy.  This role focuses on one area of R&D comprising related projects.

 

Seeking an experienced scientific leader with a background in Molecular Biology, Chemistry, Biochemistry, or related field. Requires significant industry or laboratory experience (5–12+ years depending on degree) and proven project or technical leadership. Ideal candidates have experience managing scientific teams, representing R&D on cross‑functional project teams, supporting product development and on‑market products, and collaborating with regulatory bodies. Strong communication, cross‑functional partnership, budgeting skills, and the ability to influence and guide teams at all levels are essential.

 

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Manage groups of scientists responsible for different projects who represent R&D on Core Teams.
  • Represents R&D on Core Teams for complex product development projects or in support of on-market products.
  • May be called on to represent the Company at conferences (presenting or attending) or with regulatory bodies.   
  • Represents R&D on Core Teams for complex product development projects or in support of on-market products.
  • Manage a portion of the overall R&D budget in line with corporate guidelines.
  • Seen as a leader by effectively managing junior level employees and communicating and collaborating with colleagues at all levels and in all departments of the organization.
  • Provides guidance to other departments to ensure success of product launch and on-market products.
  • Interacts with upper management in communicating project status, issues and resourcing.

Education:

  • BA/BS Molecular Biology, Chemistry, Biochemistry or related field and 10-12 years of post-baccalaureate laboratory experience or
  • MS Molecular Biology, Chemistry or related field and 9-11 years of laboratory experience post-MS without thesis (8-10 years with thesis) or
  • PhD Molecular Biology, Chemistry, Biochemistry or related field and 5-7 years of industrial experience with no post-doctoral research experience (4-6 years with industrial experience)

 

Experience:

Project or technical leadership experience required.  Supervisory or management experience preferred. Typically requires a minimum of 5 years of the following experience: 

  • Managing groups of scientists responsible for different projects who represent R&D on Core Teams.
  • Representing R&D on Core Teams for complex product development projects or in support of on-market products.
  • Representing the Company at conferences (presenting or attending) or with regulatory bodies.
  • Managing a portion of the overall R&D budget in line with corporate guidelines.
  • Must be viewed as a leader based on effectively managing junior level employees and communicating and collaborating with colleagues at all levels and in all departments of the organization.
  • Providing guidance to other departments to ensure success of product launch and on-market products.
  • Interacting with upper management in communicating project status, issues and resourcing.

 

Equivalency

Depending on the area of assignment, directly related experience or a combination of directly related education and experience and/or competencies may be considered in a place of the stated requirements. Example: If a job level requires a bachelor’s degree plus 4 years of experience, an equivalency could include 8 years of experience, an Associate’s degree with 6 years of experience, or a Master’s degree with 2 years of experience.

                                                                        

The estimated pay scale for the Director, Product Development role based in California, is $199,907.95 to $249,884.65. Additionally, the position is eligible to participate in up to 30% of the company bonus pool. Final compensation packages will ultimately depend on education, experience, skillset, knowledge, where the role is performed, internal equity and market data.
