Job Purpose:

Summer internship to perform research in a laboratory setting and to gain experience in biological/biochemical research. Become part of a dynamic and growing team geared towards research of biomolecules. Primary duties may include, but are not limited to cloning, bacterial cell culture, nucleic acid purification, DNA sequencing, protein expression, purification and characterization by SDS-PAGE, Western-blot, ELISA, protein kinetics/binding, mass-spectrometry, and protein conjugation. Intern will be exposed to these functions through daily interaction, lab meetings, and will have the opportunity to learn laboratory techniques. The internship will be structured to meet the needs of the project and interests of the intern.

 

Major Accountabilities:

  • Assist and/or perform experiments in the laboratory
  • Record observations and results
  • Provide regular updates to scientists on the status of experiments
  • Perform appropriate data analysis
  • Prepare written lab reports on all phases of laboratory experimental projects
  • Presents results to colleagues at group/departmental/scientific meetings. 
  • Other duties as assigned

 

Education:

Recently finished (<6 months) undergraduate degree or degree near completion in any applicable science or engineering field with a minimum of two years of university experience

 

Experience/Professional/Technical requirement:

  • Completed all of the general chemistry and/or biology laboratory courses for typical freshmen and sophomores curriculum is essential
  • Completed relevant biochemistry laboratory courses is valuable
  • Experience as a laboratory teaching assistant is very valuable
  • Conducted or conducting undergraduate scientific research, especially for 12 months or longer, is extremely valuable
  • Interest in further studies in biochemistry, protein chemistry, molecular biology, and/or immunology

The estimated pay scale for Research Intern role based in Emeryville, California is $18-$20 per hour. Final compensation packages will ultimately depend on education, experience, skill set, knowledge, where the role is performed, internal equity, and market data.
